Scope of refurbishment & CNC retrofit work

A partial machine refurbishment & full CNC retrofit of a TBT model B3B 5000 NC Deep Hole Drilling Machine.

Mechanically, the machine was in quite good condition, therefore, the mechaincal refurbishment work was limited to renewal of the Boring Spindle Drive System; this included replacement of the entire Worm Rack (14,000mm) and the two phosphor bronze anti-backlash Worms.

Electrically, the machine was retrofitted with a new Siemens 840D Control, new digital spindle drives to both the Workhead & Boring Spindle, new Digital Axis Servo Drives, a new electrical cabinet complete with all new control gear and a complete machine re-wire.

This machine is key to our Clients entire production process; unreliability of the old CNC & electrics regularly caused bottlenecks in the manufacturing programme.

In addition to improving machine availability, our Client also had a requirement to increase capacity, in terms of the size of holes that could be drilled. The retrofit carried out by EES achieved both objectives, with the drilling capacity increased from 150mm dia to 200mm dia.
